Back to School Blessings

A new school year brings new beginnings, new opportunities, and often a few unknowns. We naturally want to protect the children we love, help them succeed, and prepare them for whatever the year may bring. But we can’t know every challenge they will face or walk every step of the journey with them. We can, however, entrust them to the God who knows every day ahead of them and remind our children of His presence, His promises, and His love.

To speak a blessing over someone is more than simply wishing them well. It is an intentional way of speaking God’s truth and promises over their lives. Blessings can certainly be prayed between you and God, but they can also be spoken aloud, allowing the one you are blessing to hear God’s Word and His truth spoken directly to their heart, mind, and spirit. We aren’t guaranteeing a particular outcome or speaking with our own authority; rather, we are boldly speaking the truths and promises of Scripture over the life of someone we love, asking God to work in their life and inviting them to receive and hold onto those truths for themselves.

You can speak or pray one of these following blessings a day, or use these blessings however you feel led. Choose one that speaks to something your child is facing, return to a favorite throughout the school year, or speak a different blessing over each child in your life. You can pray them aloud at the breakfast table, on the drive to school, before bedtime, send a blessing via text or as a note in their lunch box, or simply speak the words over your child as a reminder of God’s truth and His love. There is no right or wrong way to use these (and your own!) blessings—simply use them as you feel led, as a way to intentionally place the children you love in God’s hands and cover them in the truth of His Word.

If possible, lay your hands on the child as you speak these blessings, personalize them by saying their name and making it personal to their needs and situations. You can make each blessing your prayer for the year ahead.

A Blessing of God’s Presence
May you begin this school year knowing that you never go alone. Wherever you go and whatever challenges you face, may you remember the promise of God’s Word: “The LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). May you be continually be aware of His presence and trust that He is near in every moment of your day.

A Blessing of Courage
May you be strong and courageous this school year. When you feel nervous, left out, or afraid, may you remember that you do not have to face those moments in your own strength. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged… for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). May His presence give you courage to do what is right, even when it is difficult.

A Blessing of Wisdom
May God give you wisdom as you learn, grow, make decisions, and navigate new situations this year. When you don’t know what to do, may you remember that you can ask Him. His Word promises, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all” (James 1:5). May you seek His wisdom and trust Him to guide you.

A Blessing of Friendships
May God surround you with friends who encourage you, care for you, and point you toward what is good and true. May you also be that kind of friend to others. When you see someone who is lonely or left out, may God give you the courage to reach out. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). May your friendships be marked by kindness, encouragement, and the love of Christ.

A Blessing for Difficult Days
When school or certain situations feel hard, may you remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out or do everything perfectly. When you are frustrated, disappointed, or struggling, may you lean into God’s strength. Jesus says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). May you discover that God’s grace and His power is with you even in the places where you feel weak or inadequate.

A Blessing of Identity
May you never believe that your worth is determined by your grades, accomplishments, appearance, popularity, athletic ability, or what others think of you. May you remember that your worth comes from the God who created you. “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:14). May you know that you are wonderfully made, deeply loved, and created by God with purpose.

A Blessing of Kindness
May your words and actions reflect the heart of Jesus wherever you go. May you be quick to notice those who need encouragement and willing to show kindness even when no one is watching. May you “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32). May the kindness you show become a reflection of the kindness God has shown you.

A Blessing of Protection
May the Lord watch over you as you go about your school day and your activities. May He protect you, guide you, and surround you with people who care for you. May you rest in His promise: “The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:8). May you know that you are held safely in His care.

A Blessing of Growth
May this school year be a season of growth—not only in what you know, but in who you are becoming. May you grow in wisdom, character, kindness, and in your relationship with God and others. May you follow the example of Jesus, who “grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and all the people” (Luke 2:52). May you grow in ways that cannot always be measured by grades or accomplishments, becoming more like Christ with each passing day.

A Blessing of Learning
May God bless you with the ability to learn and grow in the skills He has given you. May He awaken curiosity in you and help you discover and develop the gifts, interests, and abilities He has placed within you. As you learn new things and grow in new skills, may you remember that every ability is a gift from God. “God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” (Daniel 1:17). May you grow in the gifts, talents, and skills God has uniquely given you.

A Blessing for the Year Ahead
May this school year be more than a year of assignments, grades, activities, and accomplishments. May it be a year in which you experience God’s faithfulness in new ways. May you learn to trust Him when things are easy and when they are hard, and may you grow in knowledge, wisdom, courage, kindness, and faith. And above all, may you receive this blessing from God’s Word: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24–26). May you walk into this new school year knowing that you are loved, you are never alone, and the Lord goes with you.
